JURY STATEMENT
TAVA 2009
Today is historic! It will probably mark the beginning of a new chapter in the Africa Audio Visual sector. For the first time awards will be awarded to motivate and inspire film makers to deliberately set out to produce excellent pictures and sound for the motion picture, hence the theme PERFECT PICTURE . . . PERFECT SOUND.
The job of the jury for this year’s award has not been easy. For the first time it is not only about the totality of the motion picture experience which is both aural, visual and at the psychological  and emotional level tactile, but emphasis has been deliberately placed on the quality of pictures and sound, the very bane of our industry.
Marks have been deliberately weighted in favour of the quality of sound and picture. Story and directing have been deliberately played down. To win a TAVA is to produce excellent picture and sound! A great story alone will not do! Great acting or directing alone will not do!
Members of jury had to look out for great and creative pictorial composition against a tapestry of good production design and lighting and sound that conveyed effectively the interpretation of the story.
Entries came from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and the United States of America. Genres represented and to be awarded prizes tonight include, feature films, soap operas, reality shows, TV drama, talk shows, TV commercials and musical videos. There was no single entry for documentaries, a sad commentary on the state of documentaries in Nigeria and the rest of Africa.
From our assessment, the TV soaps and dramas obviously do not take seriously enough the issue of good lighting, camerawork and sound. With the musical videos on the other hand production values were found to be of international standard and give us hope that we do indeed have the right equipment and talent that can lift up the industry not only in Nigeria but Africa as a whole.
Marks have been awarded by both the jury and you the voting public through your sms in the ratio of  70/30 %. The results have been collated accordingly and tonight you will see  perfect picture and perfect sound. On behalf of my co jurors I would like to present the results to the organisers.
Thank you!
